A Drag Is Born
In a twist of fate, an ordinary man accidentally becomes the Queen of the Carnival onstage. With advanced age, abundant body hair, and limited talents, he is an unlikely candidate. Praised as a 'whimsical tour de force' (Orlando Weekly), this non-verbal blend of clown, drag and queer joy reminds us it's never too late to embrace your true self. Created and performed by Edu Díaz, a Fulbright-awarded artist from the Canary Islands, A Drag is Born has won five awards, including Best Solo Clown (NYC Fringe) and Best Solo Show (Orlando Fringe).
Touring Notes
Edu Díaz has a US Work Permit and a Spanish Passport. He can travel alone with his suitcase, but prefer to take their Stage Manager with him.
Previous Touring Experience
The show has toured across the U.S., including NYC Fringe, Orlando Fringe, Off-Broadway, The Queerly Festival, PhysFest NYC, or HITFest in Los Angeles.
Notes for Screen Development
A Drag Is Born was born onstage, but its heart is cinematic, created under the influence of films such as The Wizard Of OZ and The 40-Year-Old Virgin. The show’s wordless, physical comedy and emotionally charged storytelling make it ideal for screen adaptation—whether as a feature or a special recorded performance. The piece's visual nature, rich in bold aesthetics, whimsical costume, and clown-inspired movement, lends itself to cinematic exploration and cross-cultural reach without language barriers. It could resonate with audiences on platforms like Netflix, MUBI, or film festivals that celebrate bold, queer, international voices—think BFI Flare, Outfest, or Sundance. The screen version of A Drag Is Born could extend the show’s reach dramatically, inviting even more people—especially queer youth and elders—to laugh, cry, and rediscover themselves in the mirror of this glitter-drenched tale.
Any other ways this work could be shared with presenting partners and audiences
Since the show was born as a sketch, I can show excerpts of it, from 5 minutes to 30 minutes.
